SRINAGAR, DECEMBER 31 – The Department of Physics at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar Wednesday, organised an inspiring and informative lecture under its Life Beyond Classroom (LBC) series on “Clean Energy Materials and Net Zero Emissions.”
The lecture was delivered by Prof. Ahsan Ul Haq Qurashi, PhD, FRSC, Associate Professor of Chemistry at Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi (UAE).
Prof. Ahsan, hailing from village Dildar in Karnah area of Kupwara district, is an internationally acclaimed materials chemist and nanotechnologist with expertise in advanced functional nanomaterials for renewable energy applications.
During his comprehensive presentation, Prof. Ahsan highlighted the critical role of clean energy materials in achieving global net-zero emission targets.
He discussed key scientific challenges and emerging innovations in the field, including the chemical stability of electrodes under diverse reaction environments such as reducing and oxidising conditions, hydrogen embrittlement, high temperature and humidity, corrosion, and erosion.
Prof. Ahsan also shed light on the traditional Haber–Bosch process for ammonia synthesis, highlighting its energy-intensive nature, which consumes nearly 1–3 percent of global energy, and its significant carbon footprint.
He elaborated on greener electrochemical alternatives for ammonia production as sustainable solutions.
Other topics included challenges in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysis, electrochemical ammonia synthesis powered by renewable energy, and innovative material-processing techniques such as high-speed fluorination of Ta₂O₅ using spark plasma sintering.
Emphasising recent advances in nanomaterials, Prof. Ahsan explained how heterostructures, nanoarrays, and earth-abundant catalysts are enabling breakthroughs in hydrogen production, carbon capture, energy storage, and energy conversion, which are essential for a low-carbon future.
Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. Binod Kumar Kanaujia, in his message, appreciated the Department of Physics for organising such an academic initiative and lauded Prof. Ahsan for sharing cutting-edge research with students and faculty.
He said exposure to globally recognised scientists helps broaden academic horizons and inspires students to pursue research addressing real-world challenges, particularly in sustainability and clean energy.
Registrar Prof. Atikur Rehman also extended his appreciation, stating that interactions with eminent researchers strengthen the institute’s academic ecosystem and encourage interdisciplinary learning.
He emphasised that such programmes play a vital role in nurturing innovation, critical thinking, and research culture among students.
In-charge Head Physics, Dr. Zamrooda Jabeen, said that the Life Beyond Classroom (LBC) series helps students connect classroom learning with real-world research.
She thanked Prof. Ahsan Ul Haq Qurashi for delivering an insightful lecture and motivating students. Such programmes encourage scientific thinking and inspire students to take interest in research related to clean energy and sustainability, Dr. Zamrooda added.
The programme was convened by Dean Alumni and International Affairs, Prof. MA Shah. He described the lecture as timely and relevant in the context of global climate challenges.
Prof. Shah said academicians have a crucial role in contributing to national and global efforts towards clean energy transition and sustainable development, and such engagements reinforce that commitment.
The lecture also introduced JKScientists, a non-profit organisation run by Kashmiri researchers across the globe, aimed at promoting scientific temperament, mentorship, outreach, and support for youth in Jammu and Kashmir.
The session witnessed active participation from students, faculty members, and researchers and concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session.
