SRINAGAR, OCT 10 – As winter approaches in Kashmir, the demand for chestnuts has soared, with both locals and tourists relishing this seasonal delicacy. Known for its unique taste and nutritional benefits, chestnuts have become a popular treat during the colder months.
Tourists, many of whom are experiencing chestnuts for the first time, are particularly excited about this new culinary discovery. Hardish Kumar, a tourist from Delhi, along with his wife Priyanka, expressed their delight at tasting chestnuts for the first time and planned to take some back home for their friends and family.
Chestnuts’ popularity extends beyond Kashmir, thanks to their high nutritional value, sweet taste, and limited availability. These factors have made chestnuts a sought-after item not only in local markets but also globally.
Bilal Ahmad, a local vendor, explained that the warming properties of chestnuts make them highly desirable in winter. “There are two varieties of chestnuts: one that grows under floating leaves and another that grows on trees. The second variety, which is sweeter and more popular, is favored by both locals and tourists,” Bilal said.
Despite their relatively high price, chestnuts are selling well. Vendors report a surge in demand as people are willing to pay for the warmth and flavor these seasonal nuts provide. Mushtaq Ahmad, another chestnut seller, revealed that he earns over Rs. 4000 daily by selling chestnuts. Unshelled chestnuts are priced between Rs. 800 and Rs. 1100 per kilogram, while shelled nuts sell for Rs. 500 to Rs. 600. “Chestnuts are more profitable and costlier than water chestnuts,” Mushtaq added.
For the people of Kashmir, the arrival of chestnuts in the market marks the beginning of winter. Additionally, the chestnut trade provides vital employment for thousands of people in the region.
According to local dealers, the process of bringing chestnuts to the market is quite complex, involving multiple stages from harvesting to selling. Mohammad Rafiq, a farmer from Pulwama, explained that chestnuts are picked about a month after sprouting and must be stored for over two months to ensure a steady supply during the winter season.
Doctors also recommend chestnuts for their nutritional benefits, noting their potential to relieve back pain in addition to being a tasty winter treat.
