BARAMULLA, JAN 24 – The Social Welfare Department Baramulla in collaboration with District Administration today held a day-long function at Dak Bungalow in connection with the celebration of girl child day being observed across the country.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Baramulla, Dr Syed Sehrish Asgar presided over the function as chief guest whereas Principal, Government Medical College Baramulla, (Prof) Dr Ruby Reshi, Chief Medical Officer Dr Bashir Ahmad Malik and officers of different departments also showed their participation.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sehrish said that the aim and objective of observing this day is to treat girl child equal to male child in all respects, and pay sincere heed to her needs on similar parameters a male child is receiving.

If we give education to a girl, it means we have educated the whole family, given the fact that mother is the first and prime educator for a child, the DC said adding, every religion has treated female gender with respect.

The DC in her address said that various initiatives have been taken on the part of district administration for educating and empowering a girl child besides terms them at par with boys in every respect.

Meanwhile, various other speakers also highlighted the importance of celebration of Girl Child Day and also highlighted the achievements made under various schemes/ programmes meant for the socio-economic development of the Girl Child.

Later, a felicitation programme was held during which DC distributed awards, certificates, mementos to the girl students, athletes, workers and other persons who had demonstrated excellence in their respective fields at National and International level.
