BARAMULLA, SEPT 05 – Recognizing and appreciating the role of teachers in our society, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Baramulla, Dr Syed Sehrish Asgar today called teachers the torch bearers who have pivotal role in shaping the generations.

Dr Sehrish said that a teacher plays a multidimensional role among which the role of a mentor for the students is of paramount importance.

The DC made these remarks for a teacher during a seminar organised in Govt Higher Secondary School Delina to commemorate ‘Teachers Day’ being celebrated throughout the country today on 5th September marking the birth anniversary of India’s first Vice President Dr S Radhakrishnan.

Exhorting the students to imitate human values, Dr Sehrish said that a teacher not only makes students capable of reading and writing but makes them perfect human beings through character building and moral up-bringing. She recalled her experience as a student and her respect for the teachers and said that those students, who did not give the teachers their due respect, are likely to get indulged in different types of social evils like drug abuse etc.

The DC further stated that teachers are the pillar of strength having the most exemplary quality of self sacrifice. She added that the service, duties and responsibilities undertaken by teachers are immense, and thus deserve to be recognized and appreciated.

‘Education is not just cramming facts or hoarding degrees but it means holistic development in every field’, the DC added.

‘There is a misconception that everything regarding the studies can be browsed from the internet thereby minimizing the need of teachers. A teacher not only teaches the lessons from the text books but teaches the most important and valuable lessons in life therefore acts as a friend, philosopher and the guide for a student’, the DC remarked.

Paying rich tributes to Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, DC said that the ist VP and 2nd President was a great person, philosopher, educationist, humanist religious thinker and above all loved the teachers community because they are the nation builders and make the career of all students.

On the occasion, Ab Rehman Bakshi was conferred the best teacher award for his exemplary teaching services.

Meanwhile, various cultural items were presented by the students with different titles and themes. Best performing students were given awards.
