Srinagar – President of the Apni Party (AP) and former minister Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari and Anjuman-e-Auqaf Jamia Masjid (AAJM) on Friday demanded release of Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq, who is under house detention since August 5, 2019.
Bukhari said that the role of the institution of Mirwaiz is not limited only to socio-religious reforms, but it has been instrumental in establishing democratic institutions and safeguarding democratic rights.
He said that he will request Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to release Mirwaiz, who is playing an important role in the society to fight social evils.

At a time when there is a surge in suicide cases, drug abuse and other social crimes, Mirwaiz can influence the society, Bukhari said, adding that Mirwaiz has command over people. I think his release from imprisonment will benefit the society,” Bukhari said.
The AAJM said 100 Fridays pass without Mirwaiz’s sermon at historic Jama Masjid.

Expressing deep dismay and anguish that the continued house detention of the Mirwaiz has deprived the people of Kashmir of his soulful rendition of waz o Tableeg from the pulpit of the historic and central Jama Masjid Srinagar for the past 100 Friday’s now.

Anjuman asks authorities to release the Mirwaiz from arbitrary house detention and put an end to hurting the religious sentiments of the Muslims of Kashmir and interfering with their religious practices.
Meanwhile, all sections of society of Jammu and Kashmir – including Ulemas , Imams, religious, social and educational associations, civil society members and all segments of society have demanded release of Mirwaiz.
The AAJM has announced in holy fasting month of Ramadhan that no congregational prayers would be held in Jamia Masjid in view of COVID-19.
