Officials said that moderate or severe Calcium in coronary arteries always makes a percutaneous coronary intervention very complex, not only does it prevent passage of hardware but even if crossed the stents may not open well and might create complications like coronary perforation.

“We have different modalities for dealing with calcium like cutting balloon, Rotablation. Cutting balloon has a low success rate and rotablation is a highly skillful and complex procedure and may not help when the calcium is too dense and deeper,” they said.

“IVL  is the latest innovation, a balloon assisted technology, easy to use and breaks both superficial and deeper calcium. It has a success rate of more than 95% and is almost complication free. The IVL balloon is connected to a console which produces shock waves that breaks both superficial and deep calcium. This technology was already approved in Europe but has recently got FDA approval after the recently  published  Disrupt CAD 111 trial in NOV last year,” they added.

The officials further stated this technology is a real breakthrough for patients having calcific coronary artery disease and saves many patients from bypass surgery.
