World Water Day: KU holds symposium on glacier preservation & sustainable water management

SRINAGAR, MARCH 23 – To highlight the pressing issue of glacier conservation and water security, the Department of Environmental Science (DES), University of Kashmir (KU), organized a one-day symposium on ‘Glacier Preservation’ in observance of World Water Day 2025.

The event, held in hybrid mode, brought together experts to explore the challenges of glacier conservation in the Himalayan region and the pressing need for sustainable strategies.

Vice-Chancellor KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, in her message, highlighted the importance of glacier preservation for the region’s water security.

“Glaciers are vital sources of freshwater, supporting ecosystems and livelihoods and their preservation is essential. We must work collaboratively for their conservation”, she said.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Dean Academic Affairs KU, Prof. Shariefuddin Pirzada emphasized the responsibility of academia in addressing climate challenges through scientific research, policy advocacy and community engagement.

“Educational institutions must take the lead in raising awareness and solutions for environmental conservation,” he said.

Dean, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences KU, Prof. Ghulam Jeelani, underscored the importance of glacier preservation for water security, highlighting the Himalayan region’s vulnerability to climate change.

The symposium featured technical sessions led by experts, covering topics such as sustainable Himalayas and water security in India, glacier-related hazards and the cryosphere in the Western Himalayas. The event attracted over 150 participants from academic and research institutions across the country.

Coordinator DES KU, Dr. Sami Ullah Bhat, delivered the welcome address while Dr. Arshid Jehangir, organizing secretary and faculty at DES KU, delivered the formal vote of thanks.
