SKIMS Organises Grand Round On Management Of Severe Traumatic Brain Injury At SKIMS

SRINAGAR, MARCH 09 – Sheri Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences organised a grand round on Saturday .The topic for discussion was “Severe traumatic brain injury – Management and SKIMS Experience.” The grand round is a perennial feature of SKIMS held every Saturday morning from 9 am to 10 am.
Todays, theme was chosen in view of the increasing frequency of Traumatic Brain Injuries and to update about the management of patients with traumatic brain injury. SKIMS being a major referral centre for complex neurotrauma, a review of the cases admitted at SKIMS in last one year was presented with success stories from the Neuro Intensive Care Unit. Around 112 patients of severe traumatic brain injury have been admitted January 2024 to December 2024. Road traffic accidents are commonly implicated in around 62 percent of traumatic brain Injury with about 46 percent of these patients less than 30 years of age emphasising the awareness of safe driving practices in our youth. Around 72 patients were discharged from SKIMS in healthy state with a good neurological recovery and good functional outcomes. The recovery profile of patients with severe traumatic brain injury is comparable to major national and international centres.
Director SKIMS and Ex officio secretary to Government laid emphasis on educating the masses about the prevention of Traumatic Brain Injury. He reiterated that SKIMS would lay further emphasis on the preventive and curative aspects in the management of traumatic brain injury by organising workshops in this regard to educate the public and medicos.
At the end, Director SKIMS Prof Ashraf Ganai and Associate Dean SKIMS Prof GM Gulzar felicitated, Dr Arshad Ahmad Pandith Associate Professor, Human Genetics centre SKIMS who has been conferred by Cavinkare ability awards. Coincidentally, Dr Arshad Ahmad Pandith is himself a victim of trauma and inspite of the disability he has been an exemplary researcher and health care service provider in medical sciences, despite being ambulatory on a wheel chair due to paraplegia. Director SKIMS emphasised that he is an inspiration for all the victims who suffer from severe trauma with a rise to intellectual excellence.
