KU’s library committee reviews development plans

SRINAGAR, JANUARY 24 – In order to review the working of the varsity’s library system, a meeting of the Library Committee, University of Kashmir (KU) was convened at the Allama Iqbal Library (AIL) on Thursday.

The meeting was held under the chairpersonship of Vice-Chancellor KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan.

The meeting reviewed the functioning of the University Library System, comprising 68 departmental and 04 campus libraries, and deliberated on a comprehensive roadmap for its development.

During the meeting several key issues concerning the functioning of the libraries such as budget allocation, infrastructure upgrades, acquisition of rare books, membership opportunities, orientation programs for new students on library operations, and the digitization of rare manuscripts were discussed threadbare.

While chairing the meeting Vice-Chancellor KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan emphasized the pivotal role of Allama Iqbal Library in fostering academics, research, and literary pursuits.

“The AIL is the backbone of the university and it is essential to collaboratively strengthen its services,” she said.

Prof. Khan also stressed on the importance of integrating advanced information technologies to provide modern, user-friendly library services.

Dean Academic Affairs KU, Prof. Shariefuddin Pirzada, highlighted the significance of the library system in improving the overall academic ecosystem of the university and encouraged continuous innovation to meet evolving educational needs.

Registrar KU, Prof. Naseer Iqbal, assured the administration’s commitment to supporting the library’s growth and infrastructure upgrades.

The meeting was attended by deans of various schools, heads of the departments and senior officials, including Prof. Iffat Hassan, Dean Faculty of Medicine KU, Prof. Ajaz Ahmad Shah, Dean Faculty of Dentistry KU, Prof. Sangita Gupta, Head Department of Library & Information Science, University of Jammu, and Prof. Huda Galzai, Principal, Govt. Women’s College Nawakadal, Srinagar.

Earlier, Dr. Fayaz Ahmad Loan, Librarian AIL KU, presented the agenda before the committee, addressing key issues such as library growth, financial concerns, acquisition of e-book portals and databases, and infrastructure modernization.

The committee concluded with a renewed commitment to innovation and excellence in the library system to ensure it remains a cornerstone of the university’s academic framework.
