SRINAGAR, DEC 26 – In a significant move aimed at harnessing the untapped hydroelectric potential of its river basins, the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory government led by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinah has come up with a comprehensive strategy to boost hydro power generation in the region.
The initiative is poised to play a pivotal role in meeting the energy demands of the union territory while simultaneously fostering sustainable development.

News agency reported that the plans were discussed during a recent high-level meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary, where key government officials and experts in the field of hydroelectric power were present.

The plan outlines a series of measures to tap into the abundant water resources of the Jammu and Kashmir river basins, leveraging the state’s topography for clean and renewable energy production.

One of the focal points of the initiative is the identification and development of potential hydropower sites across various river basins in the region. The government aims to conduct thorough feasibility studies and environmental impact assessments to ensure that the projects align with sustainable and eco-friendly practices.

The hydro power potential in Jammu and Kashmir has long been recognized, and this initiative seeks to capitalize on the abundant water resources flowing through the diverse landscapes of the union territory. The increased focus on hydroelectric power is in line with the government’s commitment to promoting green energy solutions and reducing dependence on conventional sources.

Furthermore, the plan emphasizes the importance of public-private partnerships to expedite the implementation of hydro power projects. The government is set to collaborate with private entities to bring in technical expertise, innovation, and investment required for the successful execution of these ventures.

This ambitious move is anticipated to have multifaceted benefits, including job creation, infrastructural development, and a significant contribution to the overall economic growth of Jammu and Kashmir. Additionally, the increased generation of clean energy is expected to play a role in mitigating environmental concerns and reducing the carbon footprint of the region.

As the plan to enhance hydro power potential takes shape, it reflects the Jammu and Kashmir government’s commitment to embracing sustainable energy solutions and positioning the union territory as a leader in the renewable energy sector.

The success of this initiative is poised not only to transform the energy landscape of the region but also to serve as a model for other areas looking to harness the power of nature for sustainable development.

Official sources reveal that an extraordinary 15,000 MW of this potential has been identified for development, marking a monumental stride toward enhancing the state’s energy sector.

The pristine river basins of Jammu and Kashmir, long acknowledged for their powerful water sources, are now positioned as ideal locations for hydropower projects.

This significant identification of 15,000 MW is anticipated to pave the way for sustainable energy generation, contributing not only to the regional power grid but also making a substantial impact on the national scale.

Major projects in the Chenab and Jhelum river basins, including the Pakal Dul Hydroelectric Project (1000 MW), Kiru Hydroelectric Project (624 MW), Kwar Hydroelectric Project (540 MW), and Kirthai-II Hydroelectric Project (930 MW), are strategically positioned to unlock the full hydropower potential of the region.

The Pakal Dul Hydroelectric Project, a colossal undertaking with a capacity of 1000 MW, leads the initiative alongside the Kiru Hydroelectric Project (624 MW), Kwar Hydroelectric Project (540 MW), and the formidable Kirthai-II Hydroelectric Project contributing 930 MW to the region’s power grid. Other ventures like Parnai HEP (38 MW), Karnah HEP (12 MW), New Ganderbal HEP (93 MW), and Lower Kalnai HEP (48 MW) further represent the region’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

Officials emphasize that these projects mark a transformative era in hydropower generation, showcasing the region’s strategic investment in clean, renewable energy sources. As these mega projects progress, they are expected to play a pivotal role in meeting the escalating energy demands of the region and contributing significantly to India’s broader renewable energy objectives.(KNS)
