Panthers Party founder Bhim Singh dead

JAMMU – The founder of the National Panthers Party, Prof Bhim Singh, passed away after a prolonged illness on Tuesday morning. He was 82.Prof Singh was hospitalized a few days back due to health issues.

Born on August 17, 1941 in Ramnagar belt of Udhampur district in Jammu and Kashmir, he was a noted author and a lawyer of the Supreme Court.Renowned as a firebrand student leader, Prof Singh floated the Panthers Party in the 80s.
He was elected to the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly (1977–87) from Chenani-Ghordi (Udhampur) and was nominated a member of the National Integration Council (1991-2016).
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death: “Singh would be remembered as a grassroots leader who devoted his life for the welfare of Jammu and Kashmir.

“He was very well-read and scholarly. I will always recall my interactions with him. Saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and supporters,” Modi tweeted.
Prof Singh was in November 2020 expelled from the party for taking part in a meeting of the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD).

Former MP Dr Karan Singh also expressed profound grief over the demise of Prof Singh.
“He was a highly intelligent and motivated person, a talented lawyer and an aggressive political activist… We will all miss his presence,” he said.
