AWANTIPORA – 3-day workshop on “Building Materials in Architecture being organized by the Department of Architecture, Islamic University of Science & Technology, commenced here on Tuesday.

Dean Academic Affairs IUST Prof. Manzoor Ahmad Malik who was the chief guest for the occasion deliberated upon the importance of the workshop in the light of contemporary challenges.

Dean Research IUST Prof. A.H. Moon while delivering the keynote address highlighted the significance of building materials in context of Kashmir, an earthquake prone region. While addressing the participants, Registrar IUST Prof. Naseer Iqbal who was Guest of honour for the occasion, emphasized the need for creating strong industrial linkages between the academia and the industry, especially in the local context.

Noted landscape architect and environmental planner Akshay Koul, gave a detailed presentation on his various projects which have employed different building materials thoughtfully. Assistant Professor of Architecture at JMI New Delhi Intekhab Alam, discussed the importance of indigenous building materials and techniques in context of ladakh and wider Himalayan regions.

Other experts who spoke on the occasion included Prof. A. K. Singh from SMVDU Katra, Somi Chatterjee and Owais Asif, a Delhi based architect. They spoke about various interesting and different aspects of workshop theme. 

Students and faculty from IUST’s Department of Architecture, Civil Engineering, Polytechnic College and School of Architecture-Kashmir, Safapora participated in the workshop.
