Srinagar: Former Chief Minister and president National Conference (NC) Dr Farooq Abdullah on Friday paid glowing tributes to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 30th death anniversary.

Rajiv Gandhi was killed in a terrorist attack on this day in Tamil Nadu during election campaign in 1991.

Paying rich tributes to Rajiv Gandhi, Dr Abdullah, MP, said that the late leader steered the country towards modernity by means of telecom revolution, promotion of computerisation, lowering of voting age from 21 to 18 years, laying foundation of Panchayati Raj and sleuth of other measures.

All the steps he took were imperative for driving the growth of India in the next millennium, the NC president said adding that his era marked the giant leap of the country towards modernisation and devolution of powers to grass root levels.

“On his 30th martyrdom anniversary, I pay tributes to him, Dr Abdullah said adding Rajiv Ji will be remembered for his efforts to take country towards 21st Century. A person with a deep understanding of problems faced by our country, Rajiv had a deep faith in secularism as the bed rock of Indian Nationhood; I pay my homage to him and pray for peace to his soul,” he said.

Another Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and other NC leaders also paid tribute to Rajiv Gandhi.
