Srinagar: Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Monday alleged that despite Supreme Court (SC) directions to release prisoners on parole in view of the COVID-19 pandemic, more people are being dumped into jails in Jammu and Kashmir, thus intentionally putting their lives in danger.
Reacting to reports that 72 of the 470 inmates in Udhampur jail have tested positive for COVID-19, she said the SC had directed states to release on parole prisoners in view of the corona virus.
She said ”booking under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) two sons of late chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai is yet another example of how Kashmiris lives are devalued and intentionally endangered.”
Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba said, ”In spite of SC’s clear directions to release prisoners on parole, J&K admin is instead dumping more people into jails. Ashraf Sehrai’s sons booked under UAPA is yet another example of how Kashmiri lives are devalued & intentionally endangered”.
Sehrai died under detention in a Jammu hospital due to COVID.
District Police Kupwara has said that both sons of Late Ashraf Sehrai and others were arrested for raising ‘anti- national’ slogans during Sehrai’s funeral.
However, they have not been booked under PSA. People are appealed to not to pay heed to rumours, police said on Sunday.
